Sheet vinyl
Standard vinyl is different from luxury vinyl in construction, thickness, and form. It's thinner, and it comes in large rolls that are cut into custom-fit sheets. Some floor designs are abstract or geometric, while others imitate hardwood, stone, or ceramic flooring. This synthetic flooring has multiple layers, including a fiberglass backing that provides cushioning and a transparent wear layer that protects the design. Many companies apply a special coating over the wear layer to provide additional protection against stains and scratches. Once the protective surface layer is worn off, the design becomes worn. The typical lifespan of sheet vinyl is 5 to 10 years.

Installation
Sometimes, the entire vinyl sheet is glued to the floor, and other times, the sheet is glued only around the perimeter of the room. One vinyl sheet can cover the floor in a small space, while a larger room requires two or more sheets. No or few seams strengthens the waterproof quality of the flooring. Loose lay sheet vinyl is another option for small spaces. The flooring is designed to lay flat without glue. Underlayment, or padding, is placed on the subfloor when sheet vinyl is installed. The padding smooths the subfloor and enhances the performance of the flooring. More costly padded cork underlayment provides soft comfort underfoot.
