Hardwood flooring comes in classic and contemporary styles

Hardwood flooring styles range from rustic planks that recall much simpler times to elegant parquet flooring once reserved for nobility. Wood colors are numerous, and each type of wood has a unique grain pattern that intensifies visual interest. If you live in the Piedmont Triad, you can find the latest hardwood styles at Trotter Brothers Flooring. Our convenient shop-at-home service complements our North Carolina showroom.

Wood flooring

Both types of hardwood flooring, solid and engineered, are available in many wood species. Oak, maple, ash, cherry, walnut, and hickory are a few of the most favored species. Very light and very dark wood pairs well with contemporary decor, and thus, the colors are trendy. More homeowners than ever are choosing a natural look rather than staining the wood. Matte finishes are preferred over glossy, and textured wood is just as likely to be selected as smooth wood.

Solid hardwood

Solid hardwood can be sanded, stained, and sealed in the factory or the home. Stronger sealants are applied in the factory, so finish warranties are longer on prefinished wood. However, floors that are finished on-site are sealed between the boards, which are laid closely together. It's important to remember that floors constructed with prefinished boards have a beveled look while floors that are finished in the home have a flush look.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood planks have a surface layer of hardwood supported by the layers of plywood that make up the base. These plywood layers are placed in different directions, and because of this composition, the flooring tolerates moisture. The flooring is available in many wood species, finishes, and textures. Engineered hardwood, like solid hardwood, can be refinished when it becomes worn.

Installation

Engineered wood can be installed in more home areas than solid wood because it resists moisture and needs no attachment to the subfloor. Plank edges are designed to click and lock together so the floor can float above the subfloor. The flooring is installed over an underlayment, and a vapor barrier can be added if moisture is expected. In contrast, solid wood planks are nailed to the subfloor. Installation of unfinished boards can take up to two weeks.
